This year's National Science & Maths Quiz came to a close with Prempeh placing 3rd by beating PRESEC
in the consolation matchup 80-74. PRESEC wanted revenge for the National Debate Final, which they lost
to Prempeh.
Our boys lost to the host school and eventual champion Achimota in the semifinal 80-71.
The Quizmistress deliberately
frustrated our boys as a favour to our opponents by repeatedly shouting and screaming at them. She gave
our boys mathematical problems to solve in period of 3 minutes without the aid of a calculator. The
problems Prempeh got was practically impossible to calculate without the aid of a calculator, while our opponents
received problems that could be easily computed without calculators.
In one case, the audience booed the woman.
Our boys became frustrated, lost focus and lost the contest. This is considered a success, however, because of the way
we punished the Santasi boys by eliminating them in the quarter-final stage. Their Quizmaster who led them to the show
abandoned them and fled.
Our boys left for the Garden City today after watching the finals between Achimota and St. Peters, which Achimota won
70-59. St. Peters tasted the venom that we tasted at the hands of the mistress, which
the whole nation will get to see when the Quiz is telecast in 2 weeks time on TV.
The school that placed 1st was given 20 million cedis, 2nd was given 15 million cedis and the third which was Prempeh was given 10 million cedis. The 10 million Prempeh
received was the exact amount of last year's first place prize. Our boys were given 1 million cedis and the masters 1.5 million cedis.
They received global acclaim
because of the broadcast of the program at this website. Thousands of people from all continents tuned in to follow
the program right here online as well as many from UST, Cape Coast and cafes all over the nation. The program we planned for the
site many months before the College even selected its contestants, turned out to be a remarkable success. The website
was instrumental in motivating the boys to achieve their best,
which proves the words of Dr. David Acheampong-Mensah, the first Prep Prefect, Class of '64, when he said in his message to Amanfoo several years ago, that
"in my opinion, this Web site is one of the most important things that
have happened to Amanfoo and Prempeh College."
