National Science & Maths Quiz 2008

The 2008 National Science Quiz is here; the trophy is here for the taking. Prempeh placed 4th last year after falling to Kumasi Anglican in the semi final.

Now we are back to try and win it, but it won't be easy. Here's why.

Preview:

Four of our contestants: (fron Left) Seth, Russ, Frank, Peprah

By now you have heard about all the problems Prempeh boys are facing because of the ineptitude of the Headmaster Achiaw regime. You have also heard of how the Asst. Headmaster in charge of Academics (Prof. Ko) has packed his stuff and moved out of his office and is now working from home. He has been using his home as an office because -- according to the statement he issued to the Board of Governors in February 2008 -- he cannot stand Achiaw's incompetence; he can't afford to look at his face or run in to him during the day.

Well, it doesn't end there. All the teachers hold a strong disdain for the ineffective headmaster that they have not been teaching throughout the year. And that is why Prempeh's final year exam candidates were running all throughout town looking for WASSCE "apor" (leaked questions) to make up for the deficiencies in the Prempeh curriculum.

For these same reasons, the Science quiz contestants, though selected several months ago, were not taught or trained by the school. Only one passionate teacher, Physics master Mr. Kupo taught the boys Physics. Because the boys did not learn anything from their teachers this year, they refused to partake in this year's competition out of a fear of "disgracing themselves." Amanfoo pleaded so hard with them but they opted out, until about 2 weeks before the competition when the contestants agreed to step up and do as much as they can.

Past quiz contestants (including last year's squad) rushed to the school to teach the boys and they have been doing so regularly now. Anything our contestants achieve this year should be credited to themselves and their predecessors (the past quiz contestants who have been teaching them these last few weeks). If they succeed this year, it should be because of their own innate intelligence and wisdom.

That is why you're reading these pages without the usual fanfare. Just notice how you never heard or read anything about this year's competition on this website until the morning of the competition.
